Story/Symbolism: The Buffalo Nickel (also known as the “Indian Head Nickel”) was a copper-nickel five-cent piece designed by sculptor James Earle Fraser. The image on the nickel is believed to be a composite of several Native Americans. Native Americans are known for living off the land and treating nature with respect. The buffalo was an important part of their lifestyle and they made an effort to use every piece of the animal after it was hunted so that nothing went to waste. Many people believe that Native Americans were mindful of the impact they made on the planet and the legacy that they left for future generations. This coin was minted from 1913 to 1938, and was then replaced by the Jefferson nickel.
